myLot Discussions| "The Raven" by edgar allan poe this poem will bring chills | | If you dont get this poem cause i didnt get it just by reading but watching this video brought deep chills in me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FID1CiB4bcUOnce upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow - sorrow for the lost Lenore -
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named Lenore -
Nameless here for evermore. And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me - filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
`'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door -
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door; -
This it is, and nothing... | |
| | Helicopter Moms vs. Free-Range Kids | | A New York columnist lets her grade-schooler ride the subway alone, provoking a wave of criticism. But do kids really need more supervision than in generations past?Would you let your fourth-grader ride public transportation without an adult? Probably not. Still, when Lenore Skenazy, a columnist for the New York Sun, wrote about letting her son take the subway alone to get back to her Manhattan home from a department store on the Upper East Side, she didn't expect to get hit with a tsunami of criticism from readers."Long story short: My son got home, ecstatic with independence," Skenazy wrote on April 4 in the New York Sun. "Long story longer: Half the people I've told this episode to now want to turn me in for child abuse. As if keeping kids under lock and key and helmet and cell phone and nanny and surveillance is the right way to rear kids. It's not. It's debilitating—for us and for them."For more of the story: http://www.newsweek.com/id/133103?GT1=43002 | |
| | On a personal note How I can relate to what Britney is going through | | I have to say right now I'm not out to judge anyone, I'm not looking for a fight, I want to share a personal experience and know that maybe someone will know that they aren't alone.....and how I can relate to what Britney Spears is going through while what put me in the situation of loosing my kids is different, I have to say right now the end results are the same, the difference is I did not have the media frezy Britney did, but I did have to prove to the courts and CPS that I was not a danger to my kidsthis is the nutshellAbout 10 years ago doctors told me I was 'depressed', and I needed to be on medications, I took the medications and they made me worse, but doctors wouldn't listen to me and kept changing my medications, and giving me as many as 5 medications at a time, I had so many side effects from the medications that they kept doing the band aid effect and giving me medications to counter the side effects, at one point I remember I coulnd't hold a pen or write, there's a lot that I don't remmber a blur, but I also remember wanting to die.....I overdosed severly twice on anti depressants, the last time the kids were taken from us, my husband opted to turn them... | |
| | what was the worst date you ever went on, and did you go out with them again? | | For me it was my Junior Prom, my one and only prom that I went to, paid for out of my job money, and well needless to say, I had the worst time of my life, my date had been up til 4am in the morning helping someone move and well needless to say he fell asleep on me sitting in front of a speaker of all things.I didn't go out with him again after that, and well while he was nice, I really was really upset that he did that, and well, I didn't tell anyone for months what had happened, and when the question came up why I didn't want to go to his prom with him (we went to different schools), several months later, I finally blurted it out, Lenore, the person who raised me, had a hard time believing what I said at first and then it made sense. So what was your worst date ever?Mooch | |
| | does cracking your knuckles cause arthritis in your hands? | | When I was a kid Lenore, the female who adopted me and raised me, would constantly tell me that cracking my knuckles would cause my hands to have arthritis in them. There are times my hands do hurt, ok, I've been typing on and off for 9 hours here on mylot, and my hands are starting to get cramped, and usually cracking my knuckles is something that provides relief. So is there any studies that prove or disprove that cracking your knuckles will cause arthritis?Mooch | |
| | oval serving platter | | My boyfriend and I were cleaning out the basement of his parents home and found a serving platter that had the backstamp CROOKSVILLE C.co. It is white with two faded blue borders and what appears to be a painting of a bluebird.. He wanted to throw it out. I don't think it has much value but I found it interesting. The platter has cracks under the glaze. Was this done on purpose or is this something that comes with age. I do not know much about china. Can some one briefly tell me about this company and if this particular platter has a name.
Thanks
Lenore | |
