| | myLot Discussions| American Poetry: An Intimate History of the Citizen of the State | | American Poetry: An Intimate History of the Citizen of the StatePoetry is relatively unexplored in Florida's English curriculum; therefore, I have reasoned that the best way to compensate for this would be to completely immerse myself in the history of American Poetry. Beginning not, of course, with the history of poetry itself but rather with the Puritan era, it's succeeding eras (touching upon those dismal decades of melancholy as well as the flower-child inspiring years of Walt Whitman’s work), and concluding in the present so to speak. In so doing I hope to prove how the poetry both affected the nation, and was in turn affected (perhaps afflicted) by the social aspects and conflicts of the nation at the time. Beginning with the Puritan, or more pc. Colonial, Era we find ourselves surrounded by outdated devices and jejune expressionism. Poets of the day had scarcely little exposure to anything else of literary merit at the time. Their work reflected their history, and the backgrounds of their works were most clearly derived from England diction and voice; used to reinforce the authority of the Bible and the church. Alienated for the most part from the rest of the... | |
| | The RED FLAG List- Warning signs that he (or She) is BAD NEWS... | | Too many women are misled by the romantic myth that men are "diamonds in the rough" and we are supposed to "help" them become better men, often by sacrificing our own needs. We are socialized to believe that if we help them, take care of them, give up our own needs for theirs, they will "take care" of us. BLEAH. Of course, men are just as vulnerable- they often marry women they barely know, feeling thatthey have to be "mature" and "grown up" and then end up miserable because they`re stuck with someone they have nothing in common with. Or they play "rescuer" and take up with women who are little, fragile dolls who need to be "taken care of" and they say things like "She needs me, she`s so fragile. she`s like a little wounded deer."Barf.
The sad thing is, that the men/women who can change, do it on their own. OUTSIDE of a relationship. They take time off from relationships, and work on their relationship with themselves. They can demonstrate REAL work and real change, rather than platitudes. The men/women who go from relationship to relationship, (often leaving one partner for another) are NOT going to get past their issues. And the sad thing is that far too many men, despite their...
| | christ forgotten | | the scars in my soul,
the wounds in my heart,
they cut so deep it bleeds my life.
not broken, for the wounded deer is the one that leaps the highest.
not comforted by the thoughts of Shangri-la;nor enlightened by the teachings of christ.
father, how do you forgive such sinners?
your children rebel against you,
youn stood still.
the kill before your eyes,
yet you remain calm.
you wrath which will come soon is what i fear the most.
i once gave comfort to the fallen,
but now Iam the fallen.
a devil to start the wars but no christ to end it.
i stayed in silence to put my words together,
i join the sinfuls to regain innocence.
innocence that left this world long ago
is now a century.
before you come my lord;from you i will depart.
i will be gone when the first snow falls.
my sins unwashed, ny life unforgiven.
may innocent reborn once more.kekhrieluotuo

| | Umrao Jaan | | Starring: Shabana Azmi, Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Puru Raj Kumar, Suniel Shetty
Edited & Directed by J.P. Dutta
Rating:*** ½Ummmm….Rai Jaan!In one of the countless visuals of stunning resonance, Aishwarya playing the doomed and poetic tawaif Umrao Jaan Adaa, passes through a burning field of crops. "The crops have been reaped, Now the fields are being burnt for good luck next year," explains a helpful co-passenger.That one gloriously revealing moment captures that strange and sublime ethos of pathos that coloured the life and times of the 19th century Lucknowi poetess who in her words is a badnasibi ki misaal (the classic example of misfortune). We've seen Lucknow and the rest of Uttar Pradesh in several Hindi films ranging from Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan to Chandan Arora's Main Meri Patni Aur Woh. The city and its surrounding topography has never looked more vivid in its evocation of a crisis of cultural poignancy.Perched between a world of the kotha amd the outer world of growing deceit and betrayal the story of little Ameeran's journey from her quaint and happy family life to the lonely pride of the Kotha, is mapped in lucid vivid...
